Blog Entry No. 6 (Bandaging & Dressing and Signs & Symptoms of Illnesses & Diseases)

What is Bandaging?
  • Bandaging is another home treatment a home nurse or a caregiver should administer to a patient. A bandage is available in various form such as roller bandage. Triangular, and elastic bandage(for minor wounds) Bandages are used for binding up wounds or other injuries and controlling bleeding in a particular area.

What are the Bandaging pattern?
  • Simple Spiral - This is used when the part of the body to be bandaged is of uniform size like finger or forearm.
  • Figure eight -  A roller bandage is applied starting below the wound and progressing up and encircling the limb in a figure of "Eight" pattern.
  • Figure (8) eight spiral - This is a variation of figure eight which is used for a flexed joint like a knee or an elbow.
  • Triangular bandage for hand injuries - Fold a square cloth to make a triangular bandage.
  • Triangular bandage for chest and back injuries - Place the triangular bandage over the injury.
  • Triangular bandage for upper limb injuries - Use a sling to support and protect the upper limb.
How to apply the bandage properly on the injury?
  • Cover the wound with the dressing. The dressing should extend beyond the wound by about 1/2 inch so that it covers the wound completely and allows room to affix the dressing to uninjured skin.
  •  Cut four strips of athletic tape and affix them to the dressing and skin on all four sides of the dressing. The purpose of the bandage is to help keep the dressing in place, and it shouldn't be too loose (able to move around) or too tight (impairing circulation).
  • If there is a risk that the wound will be exposed to water, cover the bandage with waterproof material such as waterproof tape or plastic.

Who should do the first aid?
  • Anyone can do the first aid but you should have knowledge about first aiding. The first aider is the one who knows how to first aid.
